St Martin's Tower is also known as Carfax Tower and is all that remains of St Martin's Church that was built in the 1100s. In the 1800s, safety concerns led to the church being demolished leaving its tower. The name Carfax comes from the French word 'carrefour' which means crossroads. If you look closely, you can see the two 'Quarterboys' that ring the bells under the clock.
